N.W.A's The Word Cloud

In an ongoing effort to better understand the many classic albums of Los Angeles, we've come upon an equation that gets to the heart of the matter without much thinking, analysis, verbiage or any of those other "old-model" music criticism techniques that have become obsolete. Specifically, wordle, the "word cloud" generating website that analyzes lyrics based on the frequency of word occurrences.

Word clouds: We're kind of obsessed with generating them right now. Each week brings a new challenge. Lyrics sites aren't sticklers for spelling, usage or punctuation, so when feeding info into the wordle box we have to go through the words and rhymes line by line to make sure it's all kosher.

That's fine when you've got repetitive declarations like those in Black Flag's Damaged, which we analyzed last week. And going through the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds line by line is a beautiful thing.

And then there's N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton, a beast of a record with more lines than T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland," with added frustration of lots and lots of word shortenin' that you gotta fix lest the results get all screwy.

But we gotta suffer for our art, a notion that N.W.A put forth quite mightily when composing the 1989 masterpiece. One hundred years hence, when historians are trying to understand race relations in late century Los Angeles, they will refer to Straight Outta Compton to get to the reality behind the analysis -- and it'll still sound fresh as fuck. Porn Star Janine Lindemulder Loses Battle In Jesse James/Sandra Bullock Custody War

Janine Lindemulder, the porn star embroiled in a custody dispute with Spike TV star Jesse James and A-lister Sandra Bullock, was denied expanded visitation rights for her daughter with James, Sunny, in an Orange County, California family court on Monday.

Lindemulder is currently seeing the child during limited daytime hours; she had hoped to receive regular overnight visits with the 5-year-old, but Commissioner Thomas Schulte denied the request. The commissioner did grant her one overnight -- Christmas Eve -- with the addendum that Sunny be returned to James and the Speed star by 12 p.m. Christmas day.


Bullock and James have claimed Lindemulder is unfit to raise Sunny for a variety of reasons. James told the court that "good cause exists for the court to conduct a review to determine if [Sunny] will be safe with [Lindemulder]. She should be restrained from allowing the child around pornographers, drug addicts, guns and firearms, felons and other unsafe environments."

Lindemulder is slated to appear for a hearing next week on a possible probation violation stemming from a 2008 tax evasion conviction.

While the great majority of mainstream comedic talent is male, we need to stop and take note of the growing number of comediennes in the industry. Sadly, many of those women only help to reinforce the stereotypes that keep men at the forefront of Comedy. Luckily for us, not all of them fail, and those that do get through it all tend to have the added bonus of being very hot. Drop-dead gorgeous Whitney Cummings may be stunningly beautiful, but she’s got a mouth that could make prison guards blush, and wit to match. Only 27 years old, Cummings has already managed to get herself in on the roast of Joan Rivers, in which she delivered some of the funniest jokes of the evening to an audience larger than she’d ever performed in front of before. Aside from that, she’s spent time on MTV’s Punk’d, is a regular on Chelsea Lately, and writes for or has written for numerous major comedy productions.

Daughter of much-loved Chris Elliott, Abby didn’t fall too far from the tree. She did, however, fall far enough to come out looking the way she does, and for that we are all thankful. The young comedienne is now in her sophomore season on SNL, her biggest break to date, and she’s also done voice work for King of the Hill and Minoriteam.

Kristen Wiig



This native New Yorker is now on her fifth season of SNL and has more big names in the industry attached to her than most could ever dream of meeting. She’s been in such notable movies as Knocked Up, Walk Hard, Ghost Town and Adventureland, and she shows no sign of stopping there. We expect to see far more of Kristen Wiig in the years to come.

Just starting her career, now in her freshman year at SNL, Nasim Pedrad looks more than promising. Sacha Baron Cohen sued for $126 million over Bruno

A man from Bethlehem is not seeing the funny side of Sacha Baron Cohen's film Bruno.

Ayman Abu Aita is suing the British star over his portrayal in the mockumentary which follows an un-politically correct Austrian fashion reporter.

A caption described Aita as 'Terrorist group leader, Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade'.


But the Palestinian grocer says he is opposed to terrorism and claims the film's depiction of him has ruined his life.

The father-of-four says he has received death threats since the film was released and was tricked into appearing in it.

Cohen stated in an interview on the David Letterman show in the US that his production team found this 'real terrorist' through a CIA contact.

Aita is suing for $126 million in libel damages, equal to half the film's profits.

Scan the top-grossers of 2009 to date, and it's not until you get to No. 11, Sandra Bullock's "The Proposal," that an A-list female-starrer enters the list.

Because of that, the studios are routinely forcing talent to cut their quotes. "Angelina Jolie and Will Smith are the only two stars who are still getting their price," one insider says.

Actresses who just a few years ago were considered $15 million players are now in flux.


Even such recent Oscar winners as Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet are hard-pressed to cross the $4 million mark. Oddly, veteran Meryl Streep seems a better bet, years after being considered boxoffice poison. Then again, who else could pull off that Julia Child accent?

Angelina Jolie
The reigning boxoffice queen, Jolie earned a mid-$40 million payday, all in, from "Wanted, and her name on the marquee meant that "Changeling" more than doubled its domestic gross overseas. As a result, she's the one actress still commanding top dollar -- as much as $20 million plus a percentage -- for her next two high-octane projects: the dramatic thrillers "Salt" and "The Tourist."

Julia Roberts
For the twisty romantic spy tale "Duplicity," Roberts commanded more than $15 million -- but the movie came up short, grossing $40 million domestically. To enable her passion project, "Eat, Pray, Love," she's taking a far lower salary, well below $10 million.

Katherine Heigl
On the small screen, Heigl narrowly survived brain surgery on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," but on the big screen her career is healthier than ever. Even before "The Ugly Truth" was released in July, the actress was able to command $12 each for the action romance "Five Killers" and the more domesticated romance "Life as We Know It."

Cameron Diaz
While her ongoing participation as the voice of Princess Fiona in the "Shrek" movies guarantees her a nice annuity, Diaz's regular fee settled around the $10 million mark for 2008's comedy "What Happens in Vegas" and 2010's "Knight & Day."

Reese Witherspoon
Witherspoon re-established her comedy cred with last year's "Four Christmases," for which she unwrapped around $15 million. For her next picture, James L. Brooks' untitled sports tale, she's playing in a similar ballpark.

Jennifer Aniston
For sharing screen time with an unruly yellow lab in the holiday hit "Marley & Me," Aniston picked up a $7 million-$8 million fee.

Kate Hudson
Squaring off against Anne Hathaway in "Bride Wars," Hudson earned around $7 million. Joining the ensemble "Nine" and the upcoming indie drama "The Killer Inside Me" meant taking cuts.

Meryl Streep
Dollar for dollar, Streep may just be the most reliable investment around. With an asking price in the $7 million-$8 million range, she agreed to about $5 million for "Julie & Julia," sweetened by a first-dollar gross position. Next up, she's the center of a romantic tug-of-war in Nancy Meyers' "It's Complicated."

Sandra Bullock
Bullock's current status is all over the map: She enjoyed the biggest hit of her career when the summer's "The Proposal" did almost $300 million worldwide. But then, less than three months later, "All About Steve" stiffed at just $33.6 million. However, she returned to the hot list again with "The Blind Side."

Amy Adams
Adams' career has been steadily building from supporting indie player in "Junebug" to Disney's "Enchanted" to "Doubt" and co-starring status in "Julie & Julia." Playing the rom-com heroine in the Ireland-set "Leap Year," she scored $5 million.

Rachel McAdams
Toplining "The Time Traveler's Wife," McAdams stepped up to $4 million. If "Sherlock Holmes" is a hit, the glory will go to Robert Downey Jr., but she should find herself secure in the $5 million range.

Angelenos Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married. Two days before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party - Doug, Doug's two best buddies Phil Wenneck and Stu Price, and Tracy's brother Alan Garner - hop into Tracy's father's beloved Mercedes convertible for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas.

Phil, a married high school teacher, has the same maturity level as his students when he's with his pals. Stu, a dentist, is worried about everything, especially what his controlling girlfriend Melissa thinks. Because she disapproves of traditional male bonding rituals, Phil has to lie to her about the stag, he telling her that they are going on a wine tasting tour in the Napa Valley.

Regardless, he intends on eventually marrying her, against the advice and wishes of his friends. And Alan seems to be unaware of what are considered the social graces of the western world. The morning after their arrival in Las Vegas, they awaken in their hotel suite each with the worst hangover. None remembers what happened in the past twelve or so hours. The suite is in shambles.

And certain things are in the suite that shouldn't be, and certain things that should be in the suite are missing. Probably the most important in the latter category is Doug. As Phil, Stu and Alan try to find Doug using only what little pieces of information they have at hand, they go on a journey of discovery of how certain things got into the suite and what happened to the missing items.

However they are on a race for time as if they can't find Doug in the next few hours, they are going to have to explain to Tracy why they are not yet back in Los Angeles. And even worse, they may not find Doug at all before the wedding.
